AAUW-LPD is a partner in the annual Tri-Valley Expanding Your Horizons (TVEYH) conference sponsored by Lawrence Livermore and Sandia National Laboratories. TVEYH is part of a national and global family of EYH conferences conducted under the auspices of the Expanding Your Horizons Network (EYHN), a 501 (c3) nonprofit organization. EYHN’s mission is to encourage middle and high school girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educational and career opportunities. The hallmark of EYHN is a one-day STEM conference that consists of multiple hands-on STEM workshops and other activities that may include but are not limited to a key note speaker, a career fair for the girls and an adult program to provide guidance to parents on STEM educational tracks and college admissions. Girls participating in an EYH conference meet a wide variety of female role models in different STEM fields and learn that STEM educational options and careers are interesting and accessible to them. Girls are encouraged to take classes that prepare them for rewarding and well-paying STEM jobs. Conferences are organized and sponsored by local organizations with dedicated volunteers and usually held on a Saturday at a local college/university.
AAUW-LPD has been a long-time supporter of the TVEYH conference, which serves some 300 local 6th-9th grade girls annually. The 2019 TVEYH conference is scheduled for Saturday, February 23, at Diablo Valley College San Ramon Campus. AAUW volunteers serve as workshop monitors, checking girls in at the start of the workshop and assisting workshop leaders to distribute materials and keep an eye on the girls. No STEM experience is required. Former LPD Tech Trek girls in 9th-12th grade assist the various conference leaders the day of the event. LPD members with a STEM background may be interested in conducting a 90-minute workshop or participating in the TVEYH career fair.
