STEM DAY 2025 Re-cap
AAUW’s 2nd annual STEM Day for Girls was held March 8, 2025, in partnership with Sandia National Laboratory and Las Positas College. We had 55 girls attend, up from 41 girls in 2024. Fourth and 5th grade girls from our Tri-Valley schools learned real-world concepts taught by Sandia scientists and engineers.

Identifying minerals based on physical characteristics like hardness, color, crystal structure, luster, and cleavage

Our first STEM Day for 4th and 5th grade girls was held on Saturday March 9, 2024.
And the survey says–the event was a success! 100% of the girls want to come back next year!
Sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories, we jointly developed 3 different STEM workshops:
- Cyber CSI – led by our own Carol Kinnard
- Aerodynamic Forces – led by Christine Crandall, Sandia National Laboratories
- DNA of Living Things – led by Jessica Trinh, Sandia National Laboratories
The 41 girls learned so much and had so much fun, and 48% of them couldn’t choose which workshop was their favorite. And for 95% of the girls, it was their first STEM event.
A big thank you to Sandia and all the volunteers who made the day a success!
